Intalgent Builds Interactive Tool to Enable "Greener" Package Design

Web-based tool allows companies to assess the environmental impact of their package designs

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (August 6th, 2008) -- Intalgent, a provider of custom application development and integration services, announced today it was selected to develop an interactive package design and assessment tool for GreenBlue’s project, the Sustainable Package Coalition (SPC).

The Web-based tool, named COMPASSSM (Comparative Packaging Assessment), will provide package designers and engineers guidance on material selection during the design process. It will also enable them to evaluate ongoing improvements in their packaging. For example, a designer could compare the environmental impact of using virgin corrugated or recycled plastic for both the product’s primary and secondary packaging.

Unlike similar comparison tools, COMPASSSM will be used during the conception phase of package design. A transparent, industry average dataset drives the manufacturing phase of the tool. The metrics, developed under a rigorous stakeholder process including government agencies, public and private companies and consultancies, provide the foundation for analysis. Users will be able to view comparative profiles for package designs, including environmental metrics such as: fossil fuel consumption, water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

A beta version of the tool will be introduced to members of the SPC at the Fall Members-Only Meeting in Denver, Colorado, on September 9, 2008. SPC currently has over 194 member companies including Nike, Proctor & Gamble and PepsiCo.

The project is funded, in part, by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
