Intalgent Ensures Physicians Maintain Access to Patient Data

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (May 10th, 2005) -- When John Britton, Director of Information Systems at Fisher-Titus Medical Center (FTMC), learned that Siemens Medical Solutions Health Services was no longer supporting SMS PhysicianConnect™, he knew he had to act fast. In six years the FTMC physicians’ network had created nearly one million patient records with the application. After realizing no off-the-shelf solution would allow his staff to easily migrate the information to a new electronic medical record (EMR), Britton contacted Intalgent.

“We knew that the clinical data was not conducive to being converted to another program,” said Britton. “Our initial thinking was to build another system, but Intalgent suggested a more efficient and cost effective solution.”

“After some initial investigation, we didn’t see the point in creating another application and system that FTMC would need to develop, manage, and maintain,” said Jeff Gunther, Intalgent’s President.

Furthermore, some physicians did not want to deploy the new EMR format, but rather wanted to maintain paper records for their patients. It was critical that all physicians be able to access their patients’ historical and clinical information.

The solution, which was released to physicians in early May 2005, is a small footprint, Java application that extracts a patient’s data, including demographic data, diagnostic reports, scanned documents, and radiology images from the existing repositories and dynamically creates an Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file. A physician can then attach the PDF file to a patient’s new EMR, or simply print out the document for inclusion in a paper file.

“We chose the PDF standard for its reliable, cross-platform format.” said Gunther. “In addition, the read-only attributes of a PDF ensure the data is secure and can not be modified.”

“Our physicians are very excited about the simplicity of the solution,” said Britton. “Intalgent’s innovative thinking about how to solve our problem had made this project a success.”
