The Web-based tool, named COMPASS℠ (Comparative Packaging Assessment), will provide package designers and engineers guidance on material selection during the design process. It will also enable them to evaluate ongoing improvements in their packaging. For example, a designer could compare the environmental impact of using virgin corrugated or recycled plastic for both the product’s primary and secondary packaging.
Unlike similar comparison tools, COMPASS℠ will be used during the conception phase of package design. A transparent, industry average dataset drives the manufacturing phase of the tool. The metrics, developed under a rigorous stakeholder process including government agencies, public and private companies and consultancies, provide the foundation for analysis. Users will be able to view comparative profiles for package designs, including environmental metrics such as: fossil fuel consumption, water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
A beta version of the tool will be introduced to the members of the SPC at this fall members meeting in Denver, Colorado.
